15 Traders Give Up Land for Metro – The New Indian Express

Setting a prime precedent, as many as 15 traders have given up their land in advance for the Metro Rail project. According to officials with the land acquisition wing for the Kochi Metro, the traders whose shops are located on either side of the Deshabimani-Kaloor road have handed over their land in advance. The traders submitted the agreement to the Collector on Tuesday.

At least 5.82 acres of land has been given away for road widening. A sum of `20.5 lakh for each cent has been given to these traders. The District Collector has given assurance to the traders that they can continue trade in the present premises even though a portion of it has been demolished for the Metro Rail work.

It was decided to widen the road along the stretch as the barricades erected for the work has been creating severe traffic bottlenecks.

He said the road widening works will be undertaken by the DMRC. To avoid delay, the road widening work will be carried out after  laying slabs over the culverts.  He has also promised that those who lose their shops as part of the Metro Rail works will be given pre-eminence while allocating commercial space at the  business complex which is being set up.
