The Ernakulam District Private Bus Operator’s Association on Thursday demanded that the construction work of the Kochi Metro Rail along the Kaloor-Palarivattam stretch be carried out only after widening the stretch.
“The private buses were not able to maintain the time schedule as directed by the RTA because of the construction works of Kochi Metro Rail. The road, at various areas between Ernakulam North and Kalamssery are barricaded for the metro rail construction. Due to the traffic congestion, the buses were not able to stick on to the schedule. Many bus owners were forced to cut down the frequency of the trips which has resulted in huge loss of income,” said Ernakulam District Private Bus Operator’s Association general secretary M B Sathyan.
He said that the scenario has worsened after the inauguration of the reconstructed North Rail Over bridge (RoB). “We have already requested the authorities to consider diverting light motor vehicles and two wheelers through the pocket roads,” he said. “If the light motor vehicles are diverted through the SRM Road to reach Kaloor Pottakkuzhi route, the traffic congestion in the Kaloor area can be solved to a certain extend,” according to a release by the Private Bus Owners.
