New Metro Route All Set: Trial Run From
Maharaja's To Thykoodam Successful
|
|
|
It was well worth the wait as Kochi
Metro successfully completed the
trial run on the new stretch from
Maharaja’s College Ground to
Thykoodam. The trial run was carried
out in two stages. The new stretch
will include 5 new stations -
Ernakulam South, Kadavanthra,
Elamkulam, Vyttila, and Thykoodam.
Stage one of the trial run, which was
conducted on 21 July 2019, extended
from Maharaja’s College Ground to
Ernakulam South Junction and
included the “Balanced Cantilever”
bridge – the first-of-its-kind curved
steel metro track in India. An
engineering marvel, the Balanced
Cantilever Bridge near Ernakulam
South is a unique structure that has
been built above the railway lines. It
took 2 years and 11 months to build
this structure. During the trial run,
the train had to be kept in this
bridge for 24 hours to carry out
detailed assessments based on
various parameters pertaining to
safety and strength.
Stage two or the full stretch trial run
from Maharaja’s College Ground to
Thykoodam was carried out
successfully on the 31 July 2019. The
trial run on this 5.75 Km stretch
commenced at 6:20 AM. The train,
which started at Maharaja’s station
reached the Thykoodam station
at 8:20 AM. The return ride
commenced at 8:45 AM.

MD, KMRL
The trial run was controlled and
supervised closely by Technical Officers
from KMRL and DMRC - the implementing
agency. This new stretch from Maharaja’s
to Thykoodam is the second part of the
Kochi Metro’s first phase extending from
Aluva-Pettah, which is a 25.65 Km path. The
next leg of the 1.20 Km Thykoodam-Pettah
corridor is expected to be operational by
next March. Also, the construction work
from Petta to SN Junction will start soon.
We hope that the new metro route will
help people save time and energy by
making commuting to busy areas of the
city like Ernakulam South, Kadavanthara
and Vytilla easier, faster and convenient.
Wishing all a very happy, prosperous and
blessed Onam.
