Metro Rail System Maintenance :

A strategical Approach

With the rapid urbanisation of various cities in India, the demand for a reliable and
efficient intra-city transportation has increased considerably. For the last few decades,

Metro rail systems in Indiahas proven its capability in handling this need and
continuously gaining popularity due to its safe and comfortable travel offerings.

As frequently publicised by the Metro rail operators, safe, efficient and sustainable

transport of commuters are ensured through deployment of cutting edge technology
and along with standardised operational practices.

However, regular maintenance and upkeep are critical to ensure that the metro rail

systems operate smoothly and provide a comfortable and safe travel experience. This

article will explore the various overall approach of selecting the Maintenance strategy
for a metro operator.

The Approach:

For a Metro operator, selecting the approach or policy upon which maintenance of

various system shall be taken up depends on various factors. This includes the intent
of direct involvement in maintenance, outsoucing ( complete or partial) , budget

availability etc.
Based on this, we have seen there are broadly three category or approach

undertaken by Indian Metro operators.
1.Completely outsourcing the operation and maintenance to a third party.

2.Including the maintenance ( long term CAMC) as a part of system deployment
package.

3.Direct handling of maintenance by metro operator.
