Rainwater Harvesting at stations
Kochi Metro's has implemented a comprehensive rainwater harvesting
system across stations from MACE to PETT and the Muttom depot. This
initiative utilizes the vast roof areas of these stations to collect rainwater.
The collected water is meticulously filtered before being stored in
dedicated underground sumps located within each station's pump room.
This harvested water serves a dual purpose: firstly, it fulfills the domestic
water needs of the stations, significantly reducing dependence on Kerala
Water Authority supplies. Secondly, any excess water is channeled
towards groundwater recharge through existing open wells and bore wells.
While the shallow groundwater table limits the recharge capacity to some
extent, the overall impact on water conservation is substantial.
Furthermore, some stations boast a unique feature – a dedicated
connection that allows rainwater to directly fill irrigation tanks. This system
utilizes gravity flow, eliminating the need for electric pumps and reducing
power consumption. Additionally, the medians along the metro line are
adorned with flowerbeds, benefitting from this sustainable irrigation
system.
