Signalling Lab Drives Savings and Sustainability

Kochi Metro Rail Limited has taken a commendable step towards

environmental and financial sustainability by establishing an in-house
signalling lab. This facility focuses on repairing faulty, non-vital signalling

spares by replacing the affected components. Significantly, the repaired

spares undergo rigorous testing to ensure complete functionality before
being reintroduced into service.

This innovative approach offers a multitude of benefits. Firstly, it

translates to substantial cost savings for KMRL. By repairing spares
internally, the dependence on procuring new replacements diminished.
The report highlights a specific instance where in-house repairs costing

approximately Rs. 10,200 resulted in overall savings of Rs.

20,00,000.Furthermore, the process fosters skill development among
the KMRL staff, empowering them with expertise in maintaining critical

signalling equipment. Finally, reusing spares minimizes electronic waste,
contributing to a reduced carbon footprint and a more sustainable metro

system.
